The Rys Khanate

The Rys Khanate

The lands claimed by the chieftain Rys in the East (bordering some Ningul nomadic steppes), where Rys established a khanate on the model of the Ningul Khans with himself as khan. In 879 N.Y., when Rys departed to seek the lost runestones, he left the khanate to his retainer Oleg, who became the new Khan. The Rys tribes are ethnically Sviar in origin, though they are rapidly developing their own culture. The heartland of the Rys Khanate is known as Gardhariki, or Gardhar for short, for the fortified settlements (gardhar in Thjodisk) that are a hallmark of Rys culture.

Religion

The Khans have maintained the rights of all subjects to choose their own gods. Many follow the gods of their ancestors, whether Northern or Vylgar. The Dyovian Chuch of the Hierarchy is a growing faith in some parts, since the great missionaries Kyrillos and Methodios came in the 860s and 870s to spread that faith. Traders from among the Urrabites have spread the faith of their gods as well.
