Peoples of the North

The conventional peoples of the North include the Danir, Gautar, Northmenn, Nyjirmenn, Sviar, and even the Ethellingar.

Less common peoples of the North include:

There are also the peoples known as the landsvaettir or just vaettir (“landwights” or “wights”) – the Alfar (elves), Dvergar (dwarves), Huldrufolk (gnomes), and Lytlingar (halflings). The term technically includes humans as well, but most humans use the term to mean any of these races but humans. Half-Alfar (half-elves) fall into this category as well, by common agreement, but fewer people agree about the Trollkyn.

Trolls are similar to vaettir in some ways, but in other ways, they are opposites. For while the vaettir were created by the gods, trolls are creatures of the elements and the Jotnar who are the enemies of the gods. Thus there is some debate about the so-called Trollkyn (half-orcs) – children of humans or other vaettir and a member of one of the trollish races (usually the Orcnar) – as to whether or not they are truly vaettir. In a technical sense, however, they are – since as the offspring of a vaettur, the Trollkyn has a true soul, not the mockery of one created by the Jotnar to animate the trollish races.
