Pillars of Melkartes

Pillars of Melkartes

The Pillars of Melkartes are the names for the mountainous straits which separate the Promethean Ocean from the Midhjardharhaf. According to legends of the faith of Dyovis, the god had sent his Son, Melkartes Soter, on a mission which required him to sail forth from the Inland Sea into the great Promethean Ocean. Melkartes Soter established the mountains of the strait as “pillars” to mark his path. There are said to be actual pillars inscribed with ancient writing set on the shores as “pins” to hold the pillars in place.

Among the Urrabites, the Pillars of Melkartes are known as the Jibal-Ul-Yatha’, “The Mountains of Yatha’ (the Savior)”, for Yatha’ is said to be the Urrabite name for Melkartes Soter.

There is an obscure legend in the North about a place in the South called the Pillars of Thorr, where Thorr once battled terrible Jotnar and set up rune-inscribed pillars to commemorate his victory. Some believe this is the true origin of the so-called “Pillars of Melkartes” . . .
