Gods of Midhgardhur

Gods of Midhgardhur

This is a partial list of the gods worshiped in the “Heroes of Midhgardhur” campaign setting. Other gods may exist and be worshiped, but these tend to constitute the “core pantheon.” In the Midhdardhur campaign setting, there are no “racial gods” as found in some settings – the same gods are worshiped by humans, alfar, dvergar, huldrufolk, lytlingar, trollkyn, and others. The Jotnar, the Giant-Gods, are almost an exception – while Skadhi has human worshipers, Surtur and Thrymur are almost exclusively the gods of giants, trolls, and other beings hostile to the good folk of Midhgardhur.

The gods of the North are divided into two families – the Aesir and the Vanir. The Vanir were ancient gods of nature, prosperity, and fertility, while the Aesir were originally gods of destiny and war. After a long and costly war, they acknowledged the Aesir as their overlords. Both families stand against the Jotnar (giants) and their gods.

The eschatology of the North holds that a possible doom awaits the world, an event known as Ragnarokkur. It is believed by some that this age to end all ages is fast approaching, if not here already – indeed, one of the major events leading to Ragnarokkur has already come to pass – the death of the Aesir god Baldur and his descent to the realm of Hel.

The North has its own special types of sacred places dedicated to the gods and sacred beings, whether general or specific.
