Jotunheimur

Jotunheimur

Dread shapes arose
from the dim spaces
over sheer mountains
by the Shoreless Sea,
friends of darkness,
foes immortal,
old, unbegotten,
out of ancient void.
- J.R.R. Tolkien, Volsungakvidha En Nyja (Upphaf 5)

The world of the Jotnar (singular “Jotunn”), the Giants. The giants who dwell in this realm are gods on par with the Aesir and Vanir. These Jotnar are extremely destructive elemental forces, and tend to be utterly hostile to the world of men.

The realm of the Jotnar is thought to lie to the East of Midhgardhur. The roots of its mountains lie close to the Underworld of Helheimur, while its peaks and cliffs lie close enough to Asgardhur that the gods must remain vigilant against incursions.

Somewhere down where the roots of Yggdrasill meet the roots of Jotunheimur lies the Well of MimirMimir was one of the Aesir, a god of memory and wisdom, held as a hostage among the Vanir during their ancient conflict with the Aesir. The Vanir beheaded Mimir and sent the head back to Odhinn, who brought it down to this secret well and set it here. Mimir continues to speak, providing wise counsel and advice to Odhinn despite his beheading. According to legend, Odhinn cast one of his eyes into the Well of Mimir in exchange for greater wisdom.
