Freyjudagur, the 14th of Goa, 900 N.Y.

Having arrived in Helsingborg in the middle of the night, the heroes parted ways with King Amlethur and went forth to find a place to stay. The Dragon’s Head Inn was open; a thrall working late was able to get them rooms and tell them that business had been slow since the sea lanes were closed by the sea serpent.

In the morning, Caelrath headed out early to seek out the local Order of Galdramenn, in hopes of expanding his supply of spells. The others came down late for breakfast, meeting the proprietress, Gudrun Olafsdottir, and the inn’s only other guest, Baslieus Arkonides. The discussion turned to what to call the group of heroes – Hakon Finehair the Skald suggesting “The Nameless Company,” though very fond of someone else’s suggestion “Hakon’s Heroes.” Other suggestions included “Caelrath’s Company,” “Baldur’s Crusaders,” “Nefarata’s Nasties,” and “Athelstan’s Raiders.” In the course of the discussion, it was revealed that Nefarata was avoiding Basileus Arkonides . . . and that she apparently knew him from somewhere . . .

Meanwhile, Caelrath had found the Order of Galdramenn and was in the process of negotiating to buy some scrolls of spells, spell components, and other necessities, when he discovered that several “ambassadors” from Haraldur Einkonungur (The One King, King of Noregur, “Emperor of the North”) were present, researching something mysterious in the library of the Order of Galdramenn. So Caelrath hastened back to The Dragon’s Head Inn to warn the others.

Upon returning to The Dragon’s Head Inn, Caelrath found that Basileus Arkonides had effectively joined the group, despite the apparent objections of Nefarata. When he had told the group what he had discovered, they all decided to go to the Royal Hall to try to warn the king that more of the ambassadors of Haraldur Einkonungur (The One King, King of Noregur, “Emperor of the North”) were at hand.

When the heroes arrived at the Royal Hall, however, they discovered that the king was already in negotiations with the ambassadors, who were led by a man name Tryggvi. The attempt to warn the king of the potential treachery of Tryggvi and his ambassadors quickly spiraled out of control, however, as the chaotic Nefarata began threatening the king, causing the king to order his guards to contain her. Considering the kind of damage that might be caused if Nefarata started an all-out war with the king, Basileus Arkonides stepped up behind her and slammed his mailed fist into her head, twice, knocking her unconscious. The king ordered her disarmed and taken prisoner. Athelstan and Caelrath offered apologies to the king, and Athelstan presented the king with Nefarata’s flaming sword by way of apology. The king accepted the sword, then ordered the heroes to depart. The king gave the flaming sword to his champion, Hallvardhur.

The heroes returned to The Dragon’s Head Inn. Athelstan went up to his room to mediatate, pray, and sleep. Caelrath went up to his room to copy spells from the scrolls he purchased into his spellbook. The others shared a meal in the common room and Basileus began to debate the merits of trying to break Nefarata out of whatever prison in which the king was having her held.

Sjaundidagur, the 15th of Goa, 900 N.Y.

Nefarata awakened in a barn that had been converted into a prison. She was shackled to a wall and a guard and torturer were sharpening instruments and debating the best way to slowly carve her apart and torture her to death. She tried bluffing them into letting her go, but it was no good. She began to worry that she might be doomed . . .

The next morning, Athelstan came downstairs and announced a plan to save Nefarata. Caelrath agreed to help using his arcane powers. While they went to deal with the king, the others agreed to remain behind at the inn. Basileus Arkonides hustled them at cards, playing for silvers . . .

Meanwhile, Athelstan and Caelrath managed to get an audience with the king. They negotiated with the king for Nefarata’s life, though the king seemed fairly dedicated to the idea of executing her. Athelstan offered the king 1600 gold aurar, plus a promise to take Nefarata out of Helsingborg and keep her in chains until well away from the city. The king agreed to this, and sent a guard to escort the heroes to Nefarata.

When Athelstan and Caelrath arrived, they found the guard and torturer about to begin torturing Nefarata. She asked their names as she was being released – the guard (Bui) and the torturer (Ubbi) were stupid enough to give their names, and are now probably on Nefarata‘s list of people to be killed. The guards escorted the three of them – with Nefarata still in chains – back to The Dragon’s Head Inn, where it was announced to the rest of the party that they would be leaving Helsingborg in a hurry. Nefarata was still insisting that she was going to kill the king and retrieve her flaming sword . . . so Caelrath used his magic to charm her, and to convince her to leave the sword behind (which took some convincing, even with the charm person spell in effect!). Basileus Arkonides bought a cart to which the heroes hitched some of the horses they had received from the king of Sjaelland, and Nefarata was placed in the cart and chained to a post in it.

With no idea of what else to do, the party decided to head towards Uppsalir, since that was their original goal in the first place . . .

Odhinsdagur, the 12th of Goa, 900 N.Y.

On this morning, Aravar and Drake announced that they were departing and heading south. However, a ranger named Thrand Hallsteinsson, who survived a shipwreck caused by the sea serpent of the Oresund, asked to join the party. He appeared to be driven by a thirst for revenge against the sea serpent.

The council of nobles had decided to make Amlethur the new king of the Helsingar. His truce with his uncle Klaus apparently still held. King Amlethur visited the heroes and discussed the matter of the Oresund sea serpent with them. He offered them the use of a ship. They decided to take his personal ship – and a volunteer crew. Athelstan offered to pay each sailor 5 gp – half now and half after. They found a sailor, Eirikur, who claimed to know the island where the sea serpent had its lair.

Thorsdagur, the 13th of Goa, 900 N.Y.

Guided by Eirikur, the heroes sailed to a mist-shrouded island in the Oresund. They entered the cavern in which the sea serpent – which turned out to be a brine dragon – made its lair. Athelstan attempted a diplomatic parley with the dragon, but while he talked, the rest of the heroes were maneuvering into position for battle. Nefarata charged it, and was blasted with its acidic breath, nearly killed, saved only by Athelstan‘s healing prayers. Caelrath wounded the beast with a scorching ray, but was nearly killed in return (again, saved only by Athelstan’s healing prayers).

The heroes decided to retreat. Athelstan was able to negotiate safe passage “back to his king.” He intended to abuse the poor wording of this agreement later, if he got the chance . . .

The heroes returned to King Amlethur and told him how obsessed the sea serpent seemed with killing the king of the Helsingar. They devised a plan – to paint the king’s ship black, and sail for Helsingborg by night, while simultaneously having Klaus sail his ship, brightly lit, towards the island. This they did – they saw the lights of Klaus’ ship suddenly extinguished across the water as they sailed into the harbor at Helsingborg. They plan to seek out the plans of Haraldur Einkonungur (The One King, King of Noregur, “Emperor of the North”), and take revenge on the sea serpent later . . .

Solsdagur, the 9th of Goa, 900 N.Y. (3/9/900 N.Y.)

Upon realizing that the envoy sent by Haraldur Einkonungur (The One King, King of Noregur, “Emperor of the North”) was actually an infernal Dark Valkyrie from the Halls of Hel, the heroes sprang into action to fight the monster! The battle was long and fierce.

Aravar sent a hail of arrows at the Dark Valkyrie. Athelstan used his holy prayers of protection from evil to defend himself and Caelrath from her influence. Drake used his daggers. Nefarata used her flaming sword. Caelrath used fire magic, but quickly learned she was immune to the fire, and switched to using his magical blade. Hakon Finehair the Skald inspired courage in his comrades.

One of Klaus’ guards was slain, and Athelstan used the wand he had taken from the svartalfar to animate dead and the fallen warrior rejoined the attack, only to be cut down by the Dark Valkyrie. She used her magic to instill fear in Drake, removing him from most of the fight. Aravar used his luck as a hero to make his bow good, and thus able to harm the Dark Valkyrie.

As the battle continued, swords changed hands many times as combatants slipped and dropped their own weapons and grabbed the nearest at hand. For example, Nefarata’s flaming sword was dropped when she was knocked unconscious, picked up and used by Caelrath, dropped, then picked up and used by the Dark Valkyrie! By the end of the battle, the fear had worn off of Drake, allowing him to rejoin the fight, but Athelstan, Nefarata, and Aravar were all knocked unconscious and nearly killed. Indeed, it was only the luck of heroes that kept them all alive.

When the dust of the battle had settled, the heroes were victorious and the Dark Valkyrie lay slain. Klaus summoned royal healers to tend to the wounds of the fallen heroes, and sent a herald to call a truce with his nephew Amlethur.

Manadagur, the 10th of Goa, 900 N.Y.

When Athelstan regained consciousness the next morning, he began the process of healing the remaining wounds of his comrades. The heroes got as much rest as possible.

Solsdagur, the 9th of Goa, 900 N.Y. (3/9/900 N.Y.)

Athelstan, investigating the corpse of the dead king Amnir while administering the last rites, confirmed the findings of his healing skill with his holy prayer to detect poison – the king was poisoned in some subtle way that barely left detectable traces.

Meanwhile, Nefarata tried to secure a ship from the harbor of Helsingor. There were only two ships present – one belonging to the prince Amlethur, the other to his uncle Klaus. A third ship, apparently carrying more envoys from Haraldur Einkonungur (The One King, King of Noregur, “Emperor of the North”), was arriving – and Nefarata watched as it was destroyed by the sea serpent inhabiting the Oresund.

Caelrath and Drake went to see Klaus. He seemed more competent than Amlethur. They began to wonder if the party should throw their support behind Klaus, in everyone’s best interests.

Aravar scouted around the fortress of Helsingor, trying to get the lay of the land in case of trouble.

The heroes met up at the docks to discuss their course of action. The heroes remained convinced that the internal affairs of the Helsingar were none of their affair – the real problem was the sea serpent! No matter who becomes king, they would not be able to cross the Oresund if the ship they took were to be be destroyed by the sea serpent! But the discussion dragged on about what should be done. Nefarata slipped away, presumably to take action against either the prince or his uncle, and resolve the matter. Caelrath noticed, and the party went to find her, and Athelstan, who had met with Klaus, then the prince, then Klaus again . . .

The heroes met up at the chambers of Klaus, who was meeting with his loyal thanes to plan to fight Amlethur and his thanes if he tried to seize power. Shut out of that meeting, they met with the envoy of Haraldur Einkonungur (The One King, King of Noregur, “Emperor of the North”). Caelrath realized that there was something wrong with the envoy, and grabbed him, destroying the illusion and revealing the fact that the envoy was actually an infernal Dark Valkyrie from the Halls of Hel!

Sjaundidagur, the 8th of Goa, 900 N.Y. (3/8/900 N.Y.)

The heroes rode forth this day towards Helsingor, the fortress of the Helsingar overlooking the Oresund. They rode all day without incident. That night, however, they witnessed a strange aurora in the sky – and for a split second, saw the World-Tree, Yggdrasill, silhouetted against the aurora. Hakon Finehair the Skald speculated that the apparition signified that the world of Midhgardhur had briefly come into contact with another of the Nine Worlds.

Soon they heard the approaching footsteps of a jotunn – a frost giant! Athelstan suggested negotiation (as usual) rather than fighting. They learned that the giant, Hrungnir, was seeking Dulinn, the king of the svartalfar who had orchestrated the attacks on the kingdom of Sjaelland. Hrungnir offered to spare their lives in exchange for information about Dulinn. The heroes were all too happy to tell Hrungnir of Dulinn’s last known whereabouts, and wish him luck in finding the svartalfur king. It only troubled them a little that they were basically unleashing an evil giant upon the kingdom of Sjaelland . . .

Solsdagur, the 9th of Goa, 900 N.Y. (3/9/900 N.Y.)

The heroes arrived at the fortress of Helsingor, but something was very wrong. They were kept waiting by the guards, and eventually smuggled in to meet Prince Amlethur of the Helsingar. He told of the recent death of his father, Amnir, and the dispute over the throne with his uncle, Klaus. Furthermore, envoys from Haraldur Einkonungur (The One King, King of Noregur, “Emperor of the North”) were present, trying to expand the influence of the One King into the lands of the Helsingar. A volatile situation, to say the least!

Athelstan was given permission to give last rites to Amnir, while Caelrath went to meet with Klaus . . .

Hakon Finehair the Skald prepared to leave Hjartarholl with the heroes. He had apparently never traveled from Hleidhra before.

Freyjudagur, the 7th of Goa, 900 N.Y. (3/7/900 N.Y.)

After the fight in the throne room, the heroes finished collecting everything of value that they could find. They briefly debated opening the room they sealed with the two svartalfar inside, but ultimately decided to leave that to King Hjorvardhur’s forces. At some point, Neferata slipped away from the rest of the group in the confusion . . .

The remaining heroes then returned to the town of Hleidhra and to King Hjorvardhur’s court at Hjartarholl. Athelstan addressed the king, telling him of their adventures. The heads of the two trolls were brought forth for public display, and the king announced he would be sending a patrol of his finest warriors to finish investigating the lair of the svartalfar and to comb the surrounding land for similar lairs.

The king then announced his rewards: The writ of safe passage to and across the Oresund that he had promised, the finest horses from his stables, a hero’s blade, a ring of heroes, and a scroll of heroic fortune (a prayer that Athelstan could use). Also, the king commanded the skald of his court to write an epic poem about the heroes. The skald, Hakon Finehair, decided to accompany the heroes on their travels in order to write a truly great epic. After this, Athelstan requested a private audience with the king, and no one else knows what they discussed, though Athelstan did receive a very plain-looking horse from the king’s stables instead of the magnificent steeds the rest received.

After dividing up the treasure from the trolls and getting some sleep, the party explored the rest of the caverns. Athelstan found and copied a bit of a runestone covered with notes about a musical piece. The party soon found an entrance to a lower level.

The second level was constructed, not natural. It was labelled something like “Hunting Lodge” in the Alfar tongue – apparently the hideaway of the svartalfar. They found their way to a throne room, where the svartalfur king Dulinn managed to escape through a portal to Svartalfaheimur.
